I'm not Catholic (grew up Methodist, shifted to the generic evangelical churches in college), but in the last year I've spent time exploring Catholicism and the Orthodox Church precisely because they both are more conservative and traditional. A conservative shift for the Catholic Church only makes it more appealing!
Wish there was a way to send this column to Tim Sullivan, the AP writer who penned the story. AP doesn't have a place for comments. Near the end of the story, he talks about how attendance has shrunk; I suspect the reason is more because of the two parishes being combined than because of the change in theology.
That is an important niche. However the EXITING Catholic question is way larger. But will Rome going left hold them? Look at Episcopal church numbers.
