This post brought back memories (btw this is CG, who also recently moved away from East TN, though in the opposite direction). I was only 14, but I remember attending this rally with my father and a few other men from our S. Baptist church in NC. Funny how you mentioned the bending of politics associated with the event. We were set up away from the main crowd on the Ellipse, and when the rally was over, moved north to try to board the Metro away from the main crowds. On the way there, we went by one of the side entrances to the White House, where a police officer informed us Pres. Clinton (who wanted no part of the rally), was about to leave. We intentionally waited for his motorcade to exit, and (even though we would all have identified as conservative Republicans though I had little understanding of what that meant) when his car passed Clinton lit the light inside of his limo and waived at the crowd there, and we all cheered, and that may be one of the most patriotic memories I have.
I was at the mall & Rev. Tony Evans speech is still available on YouTube. He helped re-orient our priorities with excellent word-pictures. Good to know you are still writing. You interviewed me in Falls Church’s Eden Center in ‘88 or ‘89 following some violent Vietnamese gang violence, I believe you were with CNN. Thank you for this article, did not know of McCartney’s passing. Blessings to you.
As if marriage and child-rearing are outside of God's work, rather than the second and third most important commitments a person can make. I wonder what the state of that pastor's family became and whether he ever understood that his life, rather than his words, was his witness.

That wasn’t me, for sure. I’ve had no contact with CNN
I will have to improve on my memory, thank you.
I had contacts with Fall’s Church Anglican. That wasn’t one of them. In that time frame, I was still in Colorado.
I have some friends at the new FC Anglican, on Rt. 50

There is no question that he downsized his career to head home — walking out in the middle of a huge, rich coaching contract.
