Last year I bought the 4K of the extended version of the trilogy as it's the best version available and watched it on our new 65 inch OLED display and new soundbar. The phenomenological experience of whether such viewing is better or worse than the theatrical one is hard for me to determine. Once one is 12-20 minutes into the film, the picture and sound quality may fade if one of immersed in the story. The novel version will always be better for LOTR as it is the whole enchilada. I don't mind missing seeing it again in the theater, so familiar it is after so many viewings.

I really wanted to see them, but real life intervened. I wish there would have been a bigger window for watching these, show it over 3 weekends giving people the opportunity to maybe catch one each weekend.
