Last year I bought the 4K of the extended version of the trilogy as it's the best version available and watched it on our new 65 inch OLED display and new soundbar. The phenomenological experience of whether such viewing is better or worse than the theatrical one is hard for me to determine. Once one is 12-20 minutes into the film, the picture and sound quality may fade if one of immersed in the story. The novel version will always be better for LOTR as it is the whole enchilada. I don't mind missing seeing it again in the theater, so familiar it is after so many viewings.

I hear you. As you know from the articles, I think part of the experience is sharing the movies WITH OTHERS.

I really wanted to see them, but real life intervened. I wish there would have been a bigger window for watching these, show it over 3 weekends giving people the opportunity to maybe catch one each weekend.

Precisely. That's what they did years ago with an earlier re-release. I just ASSUMED that would be the case this time.

I was so disgusted with the film's merging of the teenager Pippin with the adult Merry and by the absence of the early scenes where Merry has a leadership role that I wouldn't dream of wasting my time on it.

You are not alone. But that didn’t put the films out of bounds for me.

Went by myself but didn’t feel like it. Crowd was friendly and we strangers talked to one another because we secret ring bearers understand one another!😎

What a great experience it was to see a version of the films never seen before on the big screen, The audience was enraptured. I was amazed how well the films have stood the test of time. So classic, moving, and epic.

Why on [middle] earth did they make such poor decisions about this great idea?! Do they not like making money? Didn’t these movies break box office records?

Given a tiny bit more notice, I would have lined up babysitters and seen all three. But by the time I was reading about it, it was already over. Grrrrr.

Our theater was full — even in daytime showings. You know more would have seized tickets with a few extra days for each film. Meanwhile, prepare for Lawrence of Arabia later this summer!
